Team India has clinched the T20I series against New Zealand with two matches remaining. Ahead of Friday’s fourth T20I, reports suggest that captain Shreyas Iyer could be rested with the upcoming ODI series in mind. If that happens, vice-captain Tilak Varma could lead India in the remaining two matches. Speaking to the media before the game, Tilak said he prefers to break a match into smaller phases to manage pressure. He explained that identifying bowlers to target, choosing the right moments to attack and communicating with his batting partner are key parts of his strategy.
Tilak said he adapts his batting approach according to his position in the order. At No. 3, he looks to increase the tempo depending on the situation, while batting at No. 5 or No. 6, he focuses on taking the innings deep. He also said he is ready to bowl whenever the team needs him, although opportunities for part-time bowlers may be limited. Reflecting on his leadership experience, Tilak pointed to his captaincy roles in domestic cricket, India A and emerging teams. He added that he regularly discusses his learnings with Shreyas Iyer and aims to support the captain with advice and contributions on the field.
