Namit Malhotra’s upcoming film Ramayana has drawn criticism on social media over its song “Mangal Rang,” composed by AR Rahman. Some users have questioned the song’s qawwali-style musical elements, arguing that they may not suit a film based on the Hindu epic. The debate has sparked discussions online about the musical style and creative choices being made for the highly anticipated project. Amid the controversy, lyricist Manoj Muntashir shared an old song from Adipurush on social media, prompting further reactions. Some users criticised his post, accusing him of attempting to draw attention to himself, while a television news channel questioned whether Ramayana was following an approach similar to that of Adipurush.
Responding to the criticism, Muntashir strongly defended the songs from Adipurush and pointed to their popularity in Ayodhya. He said, “Go to Shri Ayodhya sometime, and you’ll hear nothing but Adipurush songs playing in every alley.” His remarks have added another dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the music of Ramayana and comparisons with Adipurush. While some social media users continue to question the musical direction of the new film, Muntashir’s response highlights his view that the Adipurush songs continue to find listeners. The discussion reflects the strong public interest and expectations surrounding cinematic adaptations of revered religious and mythological stories.
