The wait is finally over as India hosts the prestigious World Badminton Championships after a long gap. The tournament will feature several of the world’s leading shuttlers at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, with Indian stars looking to make the most of home conditions.
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will be one of India’s biggest hopes. The star shuttler has already won five World Championship medals, including one gold, two silver and two bronze medals. A semifinal appearance this time would guarantee her another medal and take her tally to six, creating another milestone in her illustrious career.
Sindhu has received a favourable draw and will begin her campaign against Ireland’s Sofia Noble. A potential meeting with third seed Wang Zhi Yi could await her in the pre-quarterfinals, followed by a possible quarterfinal clash against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani. Olympic champion An Se Young could be a potential opponent in the final, while defending champion Akane Yamaguchi and Chen Yu Fei are among the leading contenders.
India’s young shuttler Unnati Hooda will also begin her campaign against Myanmar’s Thet Htar Thuzar. The focus will also be on the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who are among India’s strongest medal hopes.
