India Hold Olympic Silver Medallists China to a Draw in World Cup Opener

India’s women’s hockey team began their World Cup campaign with a spirited 2-2 draw against Olympic silver medallists China in their Group D opener. Despite China entering the contest as favourites, the Indian players displayed strong tactical discipline and kept their opponents under pressure.

Navneet gave India an early lead in the eighth minute, but Zhang Ying equalised for China in the 14th minute. Deepika restored India’s advantage in the 26th minute before Ma Ning scored in the 39th minute to level the contest. India defended well in the closing stages to secure a valuable point.

In another Group D match, England defeated South Africa 4-0. India will next take on South Africa on Tuesday.
