India head coach Gautam Gambhir has responded sharply to questions about his future after India’s 2–0 series defeat to South Africa — their first Test-series loss at home in 25 years. Speaking after the crushing 408-run defeat in Guwahati, Gambhir said that it is up to the BCCI to decide whether he should continue as the head coach. “Indian cricket is important, I am not. It is for the BCCI to decide,” he stated, emphasizing that the responsibility for the loss starts with him.
Gambhir refrained from blaming individual players for India’s collapse from 95/1 to 122/7. He said the defeat reflects a collective failure and stressed that Test cricket requires “tough characters, not just talented cricketers.” Under Gambhir’s tenure, India have now lost 10 of their 18 Tests, raising concerns about team balance, constant changes, and his preference for multi-utility all-rounders over format specialists.
Looking ahead, Gambhir said that Indian cricket must begin prioritizing Test cricket if they want results to improve. He called for a unified approach from the board, management, and players. “If we are serious about Test cricket, a collective effort is needed. Not just blaming individuals,” he said, as conversations around the future of India’s red-ball setup grow louder.
