The signing of Pakistan cricketer Abrar Ahmed by Sunrisers Leeds during The Hundred League auction has sparked debate among cricket fans in India. Notably, Sunrisers Leeds is owned by the Sun Group, which also owns the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad. Reports indicate that Sunrisers CEO Kavya Maran personally participated in the auction and secured the services of the Pakistani spinner for the team.
Reacting to the controversy, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla clarified that the board has no role in the decision, as the purchase was made in a foreign league auction and not in the IPL. He stated that franchise owners are free to make their own decisions in overseas leagues, and the BCCI does not interfere in such matters. Meanwhile, the official Sunrisers Leeds account on X (formerly Twitter) was reportedly suspended after a large number of users reported it, while some fans have demanded action against the franchise ahead of the upcoming IPL season.
