Team India created history by winning their maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in Navi Mumbai. Star batter Smriti Mandhana, who finished as the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer with 434 runs, got emotional after the triumph, calling it the result of “45 sleepless nights.”
Mandhana said in her post-match interview:
“Every World Cup we’ve played has had its heartbreaks. But this time, we promised ourselves to grow stronger and make India proud. To finally lift the World Cup — I’ll take those 45 sleepless nights any day for this moment.”
India posted a strong total of 298/7 after South Africa chose to bowl. Shafali Verma (87) and Mandhana (45) gave India a flying start, while Deepti Sharma (58) and Richa Ghosh (34) added valuable runs later in the innings.
In the chase, South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt (101) fought hard, but Deepti Sharma’s brilliant spell of 5/39 and Shafali Verma’s 2/36 helped India bowl them out for 246 runs, sealing a 52-run victory and India’s first-ever World Cup title.
It was a night of pride, tears, and celebration as India finally lifted the trophy after years of near misses — a dream come true for millions of fans and for Mandhana, who said, “What’s special about this team is how much we stuck together — through good days and bad. That unity made this win possible.”
