US President Donald Trump has made it clear that there is a low likelihood of extending the two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran (April 8–22). He stated that any future decision will depend on whether Iran agrees to a fresh deal with the United States before April 22. Trump warned that if a new ceasefire agreement is not reached, the US Navy will continue its blockade of Iranian ports. He also cautioned that military action against Iran could resume if necessary.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump’s remarks have been interpreted by international observers as a signal of rising tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel. Reports indicate that clashes which began on February 28 continued until April 7. During this period, Iran reportedly shot down several US fighter jets, helicopters and drones. Meanwhile, Iran also suffered significant damage and casualties due to joint US–Israel strikes, according to available reports.
