US President Donald Trump has triggered international debate after criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over actions that allegedly jeopardized a developing peace agreement between the United States and Iran. In a phone interview with the newspaper The New York Times, Trump claimed that months of secret diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran had reached a crucial stage when an Israeli airstrike on Beirut threatened to derail the entire process. He described Netanyahu as a “very tough person” and suggested that some of his decisions made diplomatic efforts significantly more difficult.
The remarks are notable because Trump has long been regarded as one of Israel’s strongest supporters. Despite his criticism, Trump emphasized that Israel should be grateful for the peace agreement with Iran, arguing that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains critical to Israel’s security. He further stated that if Iran had acquired a nuclear weapon, Israel could have faced an existential threat. Analysts believe the comments reveal growing differences between Washington and Tel Aviv over how to address Iran’s regional influence and nuclear ambitions.
