Determination to study and the will to succeed can help overcome even the toughest challenges. Five siblings from a poor tribal farming family in Odisha’s Kandhamal district have proved this by clearing the NEET examination and securing admission to government medical colleges. Their parents, Brishinayak and Anushaya, belong to Sikabadi village and depend on a small piece of agricultural land for their livelihood. At times, Brishinayak also worked as a migrant labourer in other states to support his family. Although he could not pursue formal education himself, he understood its importance and ensured that his children continued their studies despite severe financial difficulties.

The journey began with their son Bibishan, who cleared NEET and completed his MBBS at a medical college in Koraput, where he is currently pursuing an internship. Inspired by their elder brother, his sisters Monalisa, Sunemi, Ashriya and Meenakshi also cleared NEET, with the latter three securing admission to government medical colleges this year. Meenakshi is the daughter of Brishinayak’s younger brother, but she has been raised by Brishinayak and Anushaya since childhood. The family now has nine members, including two more sons who are still in school. The parents have already taken loans to support their children’s education. With medical education being expensive, Brishinayak has appealed to the government for financial support so that his children can continue their studies without being burdened by debt.
