Unverified reports circulating on Chinese social media claim that Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei may have left China with his family, possibly by sea, just before new exit-and-entry regulations came into force. The rumours have gained attention amid reports of an increased police presence around Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen. However, there is currently no credible independent confirmation that Ren has left the country, and neither Huawei nor Chinese authorities have publicly confirmed the claims.
The speculation comes as China’s new exit-and-entry regulations took effect on September 15. The rules allow authorities to restrict the departure of Chinese citizens in cases involving violations of export-control or technology import and export regulations that could endanger national industrial or technological security. Depending on the circumstances, exit restrictions can also apply to people considered a national security risk. The timing has fuelled speculation surrounding Ren Zhengfei, but the claims about his departure remain unverified.
