A key step has been taken towards establishing a regional centre of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Kakinada. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh has informed TDP MP Sana Satish that the proposal is moving forward towards implementation. Sana Satish had met the Union minister on July 21 and requested that an INCOIS regional centre be established in Kakinada. Following the request, Jitendra Singh wrote to the MP regarding the progress of the proposal.
The district administration has already identified land for the proposed centre and forwarded the proposal to the concerned department for approval. The INCOIS regional centre is expected to strengthen marine safety and support the livelihoods of fishermen by bringing ocean information services closer to coastal communities. Fishermen could also benefit from access to Potential Fishing Zone information and other timely marine updates. MP Sana Satish said the centre would be established through coordination between the Central and state governments.
