A group of rebel Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has taken a dramatic political step by announcing its merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party (NCP) of Tripura. Reports indicate that around 20 rebel MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday and submitted a formal letter regarding the merger. The move marks a significant development in the ongoing internal turmoil within the Trinamool Congress.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who has been leading the rebel faction, stated that the group would function separately in Parliament and support the NDA under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She claimed that the faction enjoys the support of more than two-thirds of the MPs and asserted that the decision was taken in accordance with parliamentary provisions. Political observers believe the move may also be aimed at avoiding disqualification under anti-defection laws.
