Breweries in and around Sangareddy, Telangana, are exploring alternative water sources after supplies from the Manjeera river system were reportedly curtailed amid a regional shortage. Several major breweries established their units in the area because of the availability of water from the Singur project. The mineral composition of this water is considered an important factor influencing the taste of beer produced in the region. With regular supplies disrupted, manufacturers are looking at groundwater to sustain operations, raising concerns about possible effects on production and product quality.
The breweries are reportedly considering renting borewells on agricultural land and in residential areas. However, the water must undergo quality and mineral composition tests before it can be used for brewing. No confirmed change in the taste of beer currently available in the market has been reported, and the impact on production volumes and prices remains uncertain. Meanwhile, rising industrial demand, poor rainfall and excessive groundwater extraction are adding to the district’s water stress. The average groundwater depth reportedly reached 11.24 metres in September 2026, compared with 4.71 metres a year earlier.
