Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faces a major setback in Mumbai. Founded decades ago under Bal Thackeray’s leadership, Shiv Sena once wielded significant influence over the country’s financial capital. However, in the recent elections, even with Uddhav’s brother Raj contesting alongside him, the party failed to secure victory. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance achieved a decisive win.
During Bal Thackeray’s tenure, Shiv Sena maintained cordial relations with the BJP. After Uddhav assumed leadership, differences emerged between the two parties. Uddhav’s bid for the Maharashtra Chief Minister post led to the coalition’s split. In the 2019 Assembly elections, Shiv Sena and BJP contested together, and later formed the government in alliance with Congress and NCP, with Uddhav becoming CM. Subsequently, Eknath Shinde broke away from Shiv Sena and allied with the BJP, taking over as CM. These developments significantly reduced the influence of Uddhav’s Shiv Sena (UBT).
Even after two decades, Uddhav and Raj Thackeray could not secure power in Mumbai despite contesting together, highlighting a political challenge for the party. The recent elections underscored the strength of the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Criticism from the Thackeray brothers reportedly influenced voters among Gujaratis and Tamils. Considering the current dynamics, it appears unlikely that Shiv Sena (UBT) can regain its former political clout in Mumbai.
