Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed strong dissatisfaction over the functioning of One Stop Centres (OSCs) established by the central government to assist women facing domestic violence, assault, and harassment. He criticized that these centres are not operating at the expected level and accused the government of negligence regarding women’s safety. Gandhi stated that it is deeply concerning when women who escape violence and approach OSCs do not receive adequate support. He also alleged that complaints related to staff shortages and operational issues across the country are being ignored, emphasizing that women’s safety is not merely a scheme but a fundamental responsibility of the government.
He further questioned why only a small portion of the funds allocated to the Ministry of Women and Child Development is being utilized for OSCs. Raising the issue earlier in Parliament as well, Gandhi sought clarity on the government’s approach. Responding to these concerns, Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitribai Thakur stated that OSCs are part of the Mission Shakti initiative. She noted that from April 1, 2015, to December 31, 2025, more than 1.337 million women have been assisted through these centres. She also clarified that the implementation of OSCs lies with state governments and Union Territories.
