In New Delhi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticized the Centre over a steep hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices, calling it an “election bill” imposed on common people. In a post on X dated May 1, 2026, he highlighted that 19 kg commercial cylinders saw a record single-day increase of ₹993, pushing the price in Delhi to ₹3,071.50. He further noted that prices have surged by ₹1,380, or 81%, since February, warning that the burden will impact small businesses and eventually every household.
Oil companies confirmed the hike, attributing it to rising global crude prices and ongoing tensions in West Asia. While commercial LPG rates have increased, domestic 14.2 kg cylinder prices remain unchanged at around ₹913 in Delhi, with petrol and diesel prices also stable for now. Gandhi’s remarks have gone viral, with supporters backing his inflation concerns, while critics termed it a routine market-driven adjustment.
