Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the current situation in West Bengal is concerning. He expressed that under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, the state has not progressed as expected. Emphasizing the need for political change, he assured that Bengal would be transformed into a Golden Bangla. He conveyed these views in an open letter addressed to the people of the state on Monday. The letter gains significance as Assembly elections are approaching in the coming months.
Despite limited cooperation from the state government, Modi said that several central welfare schemes have been implemented successfully. Around five crore people have opened bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana. Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, 85 lakh toilets have been constructed. He criticized the TMC government, alleging that the livelihood of the poor has been affected. Through the Atal Pension Yojana, 56 lakh elderly citizens have received benefits. Under the Ujjwala Yojana, one crore families were provided LPG connections. Additionally, 52 lakh farmers are receiving direct financial assistance through the Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.
He noted that Bengal has the potential to shape the direction of the nation’s economy but is currently facing multiple challenges. Decades of political practices have impacted the state’s development, he said. Youth migration due to lack of employment and concerns over women’s safety were also highlighted. Referring to the vision of Swami Vivekananda and Rishi Aurobindo, Modi remarked that the present situation reflects vote-bank politics and unrest. He called upon the people to take a pledge to build a developed Bengal by 2026.
