Turkey’s parliament witnessed chaotic scenes after members from the ruling and opposition parties clashed over the appointment of the new Justice Minister. Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Akin Gurlek was appointed as Justice Minister by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, triggering strong opposition protests. As Gurlek prepared to take oath on Wednesday, opposition members rushed towards the podium, leading to heated arguments and physical scuffles. With tensions escalating, the Speaker temporarily suspended the oath-taking ceremony. Later, amid tight security, ruling party members surrounded Gurlek and ensured the completion of his swearing-in.
The main opposition Republican People’s Party strongly objected to Gurlek’s appointment, alleging that he had overseen several cases involving CHP members during his tenure as Istanbul Chief Prosecutor. The party accused the government of using the appointment to target dissenting voices and warned that it could undermine judicial independence. The incident has further intensified political tensions in Turkey, drawing wide attention on social media and political circles.
