Visakhapatnam stands as a major metropolitan city in Andhra Pradesh and has become a crucial focal point in the state’s development. National and international conferences are now being hosted frequently in Vizag. During the YSRCP regime, the city was often referred to as the executive capital of Andhra Pradesh. Even though the current TDP-led alliance government hasn’t officially declared it as such, its actions show that Visakhapatnam continues to receive top priority. Both in the past and now, the government has consistently chosen Vizag as the venue for international summits, highlighting its growing prominence.
Earlier, the city had been feared for its vulnerability to cyclones and tsunamis, but such natural threats are common to all coastal cities and haven’t stopped them from becoming global hubs. Recently, some have started expressing concerns about earthquake threats in Visakhapatnam. On Tuesday early morning, tremors were felt in several parts of the city, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale classified as a mild earthquake.
This incident has sparked discussions about whether stronger quakes could hit the city in the future. However, a Geophysics Professor from Andhra University clarified that Visakhapatnam lies in a safe seismic zone, and there is no real risk of major earthquakes. He further explained that not just the city, but the entire undivided Visakhapatnam district falls under Seismic Zone II, which means the risk level is minimal. Thus, experts assure that Visakhapatnam is completely safe, and residents have no reason to worry.
