The issue of a leadership change in the Karnataka Congress has once again triggered intense political speculation. Nearly 30 MLAs belonging to the camp of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar reportedly held a closed-door meeting at a private hotel in Bengaluru, creating ripples in the state’s political circles. Although the gathering was officially described as a birthday celebration of an MLA, sources indicate that the primary discussion revolved around a possible change in the chief minister’s post. The Shivakumar camp maintains that there was an understanding for the CM position to be handed over to him after two and a half years.
However, supporters of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have asserted that he will continue in office for the full five-year term. Notably, more than 20 MLAs backing Siddaramaiah are currently on a foreign tour and are expected to return on March 1. Meanwhile, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge stated that any decision on leadership change would be taken by the party high command and that there is no confusion at present. A new demand has also emerged from Siddaramaiah loyalists suggesting that, if a change becomes necessary, a Dalit leader should be considered. Political analysts expect significant developments in Karnataka politics after the state budget session.
