Strict restrictions remained in force across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday following heightened tensions triggered by the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The government has ordered the closure of educational institutions until Saturday, while curbs on mobile internet speed also remain in place. Security forces have intensified measures to prevent public gatherings, with officials stating that the restrictions are being strictly enforced in Shia-dominated areas and in regions where protests have been reported. Authorities also warned that some individuals and media outlets are allegedly spreading misinformation by exploiting the tense war-like situation in West Asia.
Cyber police have registered cases against Srinagar National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly circulating false information on social media. Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti questioned India’s silence over the Israel-US attacks on Iran, calling it “inexplicable.” She recalled that Iran had stood by India during its nuclear tests and strongly criticised New Delhi’s current stance. Mufti also staged a protest by burning effigies of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
