The Tamil film industry is witnessing a major controversy surrounding ‘Jana Nayagan’, the latest movie starring superstar Vijay. The dispute has grown into a significant political storm, as the film marks his last project before entering politics. The censor board’s restrictions on the movie’s release have become a matter of nationwide discussion. Scheduled for release as a Sankranti special on January 9, the film has been postponed due to the delay in obtaining the censor certificate.
In response, veteran actor and MP Kamal Haasan publicly expressed his support for Vijay through an open letter, stating, “For art, for artists, for the Constitution.” He emphasized that the Constitution guarantees every citizen freedom of expression and that a film represents not just an individual’s effort but also the livelihood of writers, technicians, performers, and small businesses. Kamal Haasan expressed concern that opaque decisions harm creativity and the economy, and he demanded reforms in the censor process, calling for written explanations whenever cuts or changes are suggested.

Release Situation and Legal Proceedings
According to KVN Productions head Venkat K. Narayan, the examining committee had reviewed the film in December and confirmed via email that it would receive a UA 16+ certificate. However, just four days before its scheduled release, the board sent the film to the ‘Revising Committee’, leading the producers to approach the Madras High Court. A single bench initially ordered the certificate to be issued immediately. Subsequently, the censor board challenged this decision in the Division Bench, prompting the court to issue a stay, and the next hearing has been scheduled for January 21, resulting in a temporary halt to the film’s release.
Vijay is set to contest in the upcoming assembly elections under his party Tamilga Vetri Kalagam (TVK). Analysts believe the censor board’s resistance may be linked to scenes in the film questioning political corruption. Meanwhile, Vijay’s fans have launched a social media campaign using the hashtag #ReleaseJanaNayagan. With support from industry veterans like Kamal Haasan, the controversy has transcended cinema and entered the political sphere, keeping the nation eager to see the court’s verdict on January 21.
