The Hyderabad Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election has now become a hot topic not just in Telangana but also in Andhra Pradesh political circles. The election was necessitated by the demise of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath. Polling is scheduled for November 11, with a total of 58 candidates contesting. The main battle is between the Congress, BRS, and BJP parties, making it a closely watched contest.
Interestingly, this by-election is drawing more attention in Andhra Pradesh than in Telangana. The reason is the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Although the TDP is not contesting in this election, key leaders like K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy have been repeatedly mentioning the party during their campaigns, which has sparked political curiosity.
Speaking about the election, KTR said, “My name and my family have a deep connection with NTR garu’s party, Telugu Desam. I strongly believe that TDP supporters will vote for us.” In response, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy countered, “Will you vote for those who didn’t allow protests during Chandrababu Naidu’s arrest? Will you support those who tried to remove NTR Ghat?” Both leaders are clearly trying to attract TDP-leaning voters.
In Andhra Pradesh, the alliance of Telugu Desam, BJP, and Jana Sena is in power. However, in this by-election, both TDP and Jana Sena are not contesting. The Jana Sena, however, has officially extended its support to the BJP. Jana Sena Telangana in-charge Nemuri Shankar Goud met with BJP leaders Kishan Reddy and Ramachandra Rao to confirm their backing.
The TDP, on the other hand, has not announced support for any party. Jubilee Hills has a significant base of TDP sympathizers. In the previous Assembly elections, since the TDP did not contest, these voters backed Revanth Reddy. Now, the question is whether that support will remain with Congress or shift towards the BJP.
According to political analysts, the outcome of this by-election could have implications not only in Telangana but also in Andhra Pradesh, potentially shaping the future course of both TDP and Jana Sena. That is why political observers across AP are closely watching the Jubilee Hills by-election.
