In a major strategic move aimed at countering China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific, the United States has reinforced its defence partnership with India. US President Donald Trump has signed the annual defence policy bill for the 2026 fiscal year, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral security cooperation.
The National Defence Authorization Act is expected to elevate India–US defence ties and strengthen efforts to maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific region. The legislation highlights India’s expanding role within the Quad framework alongside the US, Japan, and Australia.
Addressing the bill’s objectives, President Trump stated that the law focuses on safeguarding the homeland from both external and internal threats, strengthening defence industrial capabilities, and enhancing military preparedness. He emphasized that closer strategic cooperation with India is essential to balancing China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.
The act also proposes establishing a joint consultation mechanism on nuclear liability norms as part of the broader India–US strategic security dialogue.
