New details have emerged regarding negotiations preceding the trade agreement between India and the United States, highlighting India’s firm diplomatic stance during discussions. According to a report by Bloomberg, India conveyed that it was prepared to wait until the completion of the tenure of former US President Donald Trump before finalising the trade deal. The report states that during a crucial meeting held in early September, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and conveyed India’s position on tariff threats and trade-related pressures.
Sources indicate that Indian officials clearly stated that the country would not succumb to threats regarding tariffs or trade restrictions. Doval reportedly emphasised that bilateral relations would improve if public criticism against India was reduced. Soon after the meeting, diplomatic tensions between the two nations reportedly eased. US President Trump later extended birthday greetings to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised his leadership. US officials declined to disclose details of the private discussions, while India has not issued any official statement on the matter.
