Former Indian cricketer and senior Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister in the Telangana state cabinet on Friday. The oath ceremony took place at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, where Governor Jishnu Dev Varma administered the oath. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, several ministers, and senior Congress leaders attended the event. Born on February 8, 1963, in Hyderabad, Azharuddin is remembered as one of India’s most successful cricket captains. After retiring from cricket, he joined the Congress Party in 2009 and entered politics. Although he contested both Parliament and Assembly elections in the past, he could not secure a win.
Revanth Reddy recently recommended Azharuddin’s induction into the cabinet, and the Governor approved it promptly. The swearing-in went smoothly at Raj Bhavan. However, this decision has stirred controversy, as the BJP accused the Congress of violating the election code amid the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election. Union Minister Kishan Reddy criticized the move, calling it politically motivated to influence a specific voter base. Despite the backlash, the Congress high command stood firm and rewarded Azharuddin with a ministerial berth.
