FIFA has announced its first-ever Peace Award to U.S. President Donald Trump, creating widespread discussion in the global football community. The announcement was made during the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw ceremony held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where Trump was a special guest. The event also marked the unveiling of the World Cup trophy.
FIFA introduced the Peace Award this year to honor individuals who contribute to global harmony and unity through their actions. President Gianni Infantino stated that the award represents the spirit of 5 billion football fans worldwide.
Trump’s selection has triggered political conversations, with Infantino praising Trump’s diplomatic contributions in resolving several international conflicts. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the transparency of the selection process.
In his acceptance speech, Trump described the award as one of the greatest honors of his life. He highlighted his role in achieving peace agreements in regions like Congo and claimed he helped prevent escalation between India and Pakistan.
This development comes after Trump’s disappointment earlier this year when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Maria Corina Machado instead of him.
Meanwhile, the FIFA World Cup 2026 will begin on June 11, jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. For the first time in history, 48 teams will compete in the group stage.
