The Central Government has increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs.3 per litre across the country, triggering sharp reactions from opposition parties. The Congress strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him an “inflation leader” and accusing the government of burdening the common people once again. Through its official social media handle, the party alleged that the fuel price hike was linked to the recently concluded Assembly elections, claiming that such increases were expected immediately after polls. The Trinamool Congress also condemned the move and questioned whether the BJP-led government in West Bengal would reduce VAT to ease the burden on citizens.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav reacted sarcastically, suggesting that people should opt for bicycles to cope with rising fuel costs. He shared a caricature of himself riding a bicycle, referencing his party’s symbol. Meanwhile, the government cited rising global crude oil prices amid the West Asia crisis as the primary reason behind the hike. The increase has put additional financial pressure on public sector oil companies, leading them to revise fuel prices upward.
