Big news for railway passengers in Andhra Pradesh — Vijayawada Railway Station is gearing up for a complete transformation, one that promises to make it feel more like an airport on rails. The ₹661 crore redevelopment project has been officially approved by NITI Aayog and will be executed under the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model, specifically the DBFOT format — Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer. As part of this ambitious upgrade, the station will see the addition of two new platforms, taking the total count to ten, enabling smoother arrivals and departures. Commuter convenience is at the heart of the plan — with 20 lifts, 15 escalators, and 8 foot overbridges connecting different parts of the station for seamless movement.
On the infrastructure side, a G+2 parking facility will be constructed to accommodate nearly 2,000 vehicles, and the western side of the station will be expanded to handle increasing passenger traffic and new amenities. The redevelopment aims to offer a cleaner, safer, and more efficient experience for travelers — especially senior citizens and passengers carrying luggage. The tender process is expected to begin by December 2, followed by construction soon after.
Once completed, the new Vijayawada station will showcase airport-style architecture and facilities, similar to those recently unveiled at Secunderabad and Tirupati. This project makes Vijayawada the third railway station in India, after Bhopal and Gandhinagar, to undergo modernization under the PPP model. For daily commuters, this means less walking, faster boarding, and more comfort — a true leap forward in public travel infrastructure.
