The Supreme Court has issued significant directions regarding mining activities in the Aravalli hills. Passing interim orders, the apex court has stayed certain directions issued earlier and clarified that the previous orders will remain in abeyance until the final verdict is delivered.
Referring to earlier permissions granted for mining in Aravalli regions with elevations below 100 metres, the court observed that the issue requires a comprehensive review. The Supreme Court has appointed an amicus curiae to assist the court in the Aravalli mining matter.
Further, a high-level committee has been constituted under the leadership of the Union Environment Secretary. The Chief Secretaries of four states have been included as members of the committee. The court has directed the committee to conduct a thorough study of the Aravalli hills and suggest appropriate measures to address environmental risks.
