Shamirpet Pedda Cheruvu, one of the major water bodies serving the Greater Hyderabad region, is facing a serious threat due to increasing pollution. Spread across nearly 1,200 acres in Medchal district, the lake is allegedly receiving untreated sewage and waste from nearby commercial establishments. Locals claim that wastewater from function halls, restaurants, hotels, cafes, and recently developed recreational facilities is being discharged directly into the lake without proper treatment or storage facilities, severely affecting water quality.
In addition, allegations of encroachment into the lake’s Full Tank Level and buffer zone areas have raised further concerns. Despite complaints submitted to municipal and irrigation authorities, residents allege that enforcement has been weak due to political influence. Drainage inflow from nearby buildings and institutions is also reportedly adding to the problem. Environmentalists and locals warn that unless immediate action is taken to stop waste inflow and penalize those responsible, Shamirpet Lake risks turning into a polluted water body, endangering both the ecosystem and public health.
