The Telangana government has taken a major decision by approving the expansion of GHMC divisions to 300. Currently, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation comprises 150 wards, but the new government order issued on Tuesday doubles this number to 300. This move comes after 27 municipalities in the city’s surrounding areas were recently merged into GHMC. Based on the reorganization study report prepared by the GHMC Commissioner, and after analyzing data from the newly merged urban local bodies, the government finalized the decision to increase the number of wards.
The study was conducted under the guidance of the Centre for Good Governance. Taking into account the rising population and rapid urban expansion under GHMC limits, the new ward count has been determined as per the GHMC Act of 1955 (Section 8 and Section 5). The government also directed that 500 copies of the notification be provided to the printing department. The reorganization of GHMC wards is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming corporation elections. After the gazette notification, a one-week window will be given for filing objections before final changes are made.
