

Renowned Indian film music maestro Ilaiyaraaja, who has carved a unique niche in Indian cinema, has been honored with another prestigious accolade. The Ajanta–Ellora International Film Festival (AIFF) has announced this year’s highest honor, the Padmapani Award, in recognition of Ilaiyaraaja’s exceptional contributions. As a composer and singer, he has created background scores for over 1,500 films and composed more than 7,000 songs. He is celebrated for blending Indian classical music with Western symphonic elements, bringing profound emotional depth to films, which earned him this distinguished recognition.
The award ceremony will be held on January 28, 2026, at 5:30 PM at the Rukmini Auditorium, MGM Campus, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. The Padmapani Award includes a special memento, a citation and a cash prize of INR 2 lakh. The event will be attended by national and international artists, prominent figures from the film industry and cine enthusiasts.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Ilaiyaraaja has mesmerized audiences across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and Marathi cinema. He is widely regarded as worthy of the title “Isaignani” (musical genius). Serving as a Rajya Sabha member, Ilaiyaraaja continues to contribute to music, culture and the arts. The Padmapani Award not only recognizes his international acclaim but also marks another milestone in his enduring legacy.
