India has taken a major leap in biomedical research as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) upgraded the National Animal Resource Facility for Biomedical Research in Hyderabad’s Genome Valley into the National Institute for Pre Clinical Research (NIPCR). The revamped facility began operations on March 20, 2026, marking a shift from a laboratory animal supply centre to a full fledged pre clinical research institute.
The institute will now conduct advanced drug testing using modern animal models as well as organoids and tissue based research systems. This will help improve accuracy, reduce time in drug development, and eliminate dependency on foreign labs for pre clinical trials. It is the first government facility in India designed to support complete pre clinical drug evaluation under global standards.
With OECD GLP compliance, research conducted here will be globally accepted by regulatory bodies such as the US FDA and European EMA. The upgrade is expected to boost pharmaceutical innovation, support startups and universities, and strengthen vaccine development and bio-defense research. Hyderabad is further set to strengthen its position as a global biomedical research hub.
