Harivansh Narayan Singh is likely to continue as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In a significant development, the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, nominated him on Friday to the Upper House. Known for his experience and impartial conduct, Harivansh has earned respect across party lines for effectively managing the proceedings of the House.
He has been nominated to fill the vacancy created after the retirement of former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. As per Article 80 of the Constitution, the President nominates 12 members to the Rajya Sabha from fields such as literature, science, art, and social service. Harivansh’s long standing career in journalism and his social commitment have contributed to his selection under this category.
Earlier, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar as a representative of Janata Dal (United), and his term ended on April 9. Instead of returning through a party ticket, the central government recognized his contributions and facilitated his nomination through the President’s quota. His tenure as the 13th Deputy Chairman was marked by balanced decision making, especially during tense debates. With this nomination, he is once again expected to be elected as Deputy Chairman, ensuring smooth functioning of the House.
