From February 1, prices of cigarettes, beedis, pan masala, and other tobacco-related products are set to rise sharply across the country following a major revision in tax rates. The government has imposed up to 40 percent GST on cigarettes, pan masala, and tobacco products, while beedis will attract 18 percent GST. In addition, pan masala will be subject to a health cess and a national security cess.
Due to the combined impact of increased GST, cess, and additional excise duties, the retail prices of these products are expected to skyrocket. Currently priced at ₹18 per cigarette, the cost is projected to jump to ₹72 per cigarette from February 1. Similarly, pan masala prices are likely to see a steep hike, raising concerns among consumers and traders alike.
