Telangana Governor Shivpratap Shukla inaugurated the “Nivrutti” drug rehabilitation center at Cherlapally Central Prison on Monday. He praised the establishment of drug rehabilitation centers in prisons, highlighting that substance abuse has become a severe social and public health issue that needs a comprehensive approach. Drawing on his own experiences of incarceration during his political career, he expressed understanding of the challenges faced by prisoners and prison staff. He also emphasized the importance of providing amenities like fans and TVs and ensuring equal pay for police constables and warders.
The Governor lauded the Telangana government for its drug eradication initiatives under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan and praised the prison department for its reform-oriented approach. He specially acknowledged Dr. Soumya Mishra for leading the establishment of these innovative centers. Dr. Mishra explained that treating drug addiction as a public health issue rather than a punitive matter, with medical treatment, counseling, and rehabilitation, is crucial. The “Nivrutti” centers have been set up in Chanchalguda, Cherlapally, Sangareddy, Nizamabad Central Prisons, and Hyderabad Women’s Special Jail. So far, 2,915 inmates have been screened, and 590 have received counseling and treatment under WHO-ASSIST guidelines.
Post-inauguration, the Governor visited the Cherlapally Prison Agricultural Colony (PAC), interacted with inmates, and reviewed vocational and agricultural programs. He also toured the public-private “Area 77” Nature Camp and Adventure Park, praising the efforts in skill development, discipline, and responsibility through organic farming, beekeeping, and other livelihood initiatives.
