The long-standing uncertainty over the capital of Andhra Pradesh has finally come to an end. The Central government has officially issued a gazette notification recognizing Amaravati as the sole capital of the state. The decision came after the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill–2026 was approved by both Houses of Parliament and signed into law by Droupadi Murmu. The official announcement was released by the President’s office.
According to the notification, the decision will have retrospective effect from June 2, 2024 the date marking the completion of the 10-year period of Hyderabad serving as a joint capital. The amendment also removes the scope for the earlier proposal of three capitals, clearly stating Amaravati as the only capital under Section 5(2).
With this move, Amaravati gains strong statutory status, making it difficult to alter the capital status in the future, even with political changes. Farmers and residents of the Amaravati region have expressed happiness, viewing this as a significant milestone for the development of Andhra Pradesh.
