In the sensational Unnao rape case of 2017, the Delhi High Court has given an important decision. The court rejected the petition filed by former MLA Kuldeep Sengar, who was found guilty in the case. Sengar had requested the court to stay his 10-year jail sentence related to the death of the victim’s father. After hearing the case, the Delhi High Court clearly stated that the defence failed to give valid reasons for granting relief. Justice Ravinder Dudeja said there was no ground to suspend the sentence and dismissed the petition.

Earlier, on March 13, 2020, the trial court sentenced Kuldeep Sengar to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹10 lakh in the case related to the victim’s father’s death. The court stated that no sympathy could be shown to a person who was responsible for the death of a family’s sole support. In the same case, Sengar’s brother Atul Singh Sengar and five others were also sentenced to 10 years in jail. The victim’s father was tortured with police support and later died on April 9, 2018. Kuldeep Sengar is already serving a life sentence in the rape case, which was awarded in December 2019. His appeals against both the rape conviction and the victim’s father’s death case are still pending in the High Court. Earlier, on December 23, 2025, the High Court had stayed his sentence due to the pending appeal, but the Supreme Court cancelled that order on December 29, 2025.
The Unnao incident occurred in 2017, when a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district. Former BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar was found to be the main accused. Due to several dramatic developments, the case was handed over to the CBI in 2018 and later transferred to courts in Delhi. In December 2019, the court found Sengar guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
