Due to the geopolitical tensions in West Asia, jet fuel (ATF) prices have surged significantly, prompting Air India to announce an increase in the 'Fuel Surcharge' on its flight tickets. This revised surcharge will come into effect from March 12 and will apply to both Air India and Air India Express flights.
The surcharge increase will be implemented in three phases. In Phase 1 (from March 12), a ₹399 surcharge will be applied to domestic flights and tickets to SAARC countries. For West Asia routes, a new $10 surcharge will be added, while flights to Southeast Asia will see an increase from $40 to $60 and Africa routes will rise from $60 to $90. In Phase 2 (from March 18), Europe-bound flights will see the surcharge rise from $100 to $125 and flights to the US and Australia will increase from $150 to $200. Phase 3 details, including routes to Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea, will be announced shortly.
Importantly, tickets booked before March 12 will not be subject to the new surcharge; however, any changes to travel dates or routes will incur the updated charges. According to the airline, approximately 40% of operational costs are spent on fuel. Given the disruptions in fuel supply, Air India stated that this surcharge adjustment was unavoidable to maintain operational sustainability.
