The maiden flight was flagged off by Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu at HAL's Helicopter Division, in the presence of senior officials including HAL CMD Dr. D.K. The Dhruv NG is a 5.5 - tonne, twin - engine, multi - role light helicopter upgraded from the existing Dhruv platform to meet global civil aviation standards. It features advanced systems like a glass cockpit, enhanced safety measures, and versatility for roles such as VIP transport, air ambulance, offshore operations, disaster relief, and tourism. Minister Naidu described it as a symbol of India's capability and commitment to 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', noting that the project advanced rapidly from its showcase at Aero India 2025.
HAL officials stated that the Dhruv NG is progressing towards full civil certification in the next three to four months, positioning it as a cost-effective, high-performance alternative to imported helicopters. Powered by Safran Shakti engines, it offers superior reliability and is expected to strengthen India's civil helicopter market while supporting initiatives like regional connectivity.
