A 58-foot statue of freedom fighter Potti Sriramulu will be unveiled on March 16 at the newly developed Potti Sriramulu Smriti Vanam in Pedaparimi village of Thullur mandal, Guntur district, near the capital Amaravati. The event is being organized as part of his 125th birth anniversary celebrations. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Minister Nara Lokesh are expected to attend the event and unveil the statue, according to BC Welfare Minister Savitha. The statue has been named the “Statue of Sacrifice”.
The statue, made of bronze, is designed with a height of 58 feet to honor Potti Sriramulu’s 58-day hunger strike in Madras for the formation of the Andhra state, which ended with his sacrifice. Artists from Bommuluru village in Krishna district are working on the statue and transporting its parts to Amaravati in stages. Along with the statue, facilities such as a museum, auditorium and memorial garden will also be developed at the site.
The government is developing the Potti Sriramulu Memorial Trust and Smriti Vanam across 6.8 acres in Shakamuru near Amaravati. The foundation stone for the project was laid last year by Minister Nara Lokesh. The Chief Minister also announced plans to preserve the building where Potti Sriramulu sacrificed his life and to develop his birthplace in Nellore as a memorial.
