Known for her vocal support of women's rights, singer Chinmayi Sripaada recently made a strong statement in response to the harmful abuse that women, particularly female celebrities, endure on social media. Her husband, actor-director Rahul Ravindran, made a statement that went viral, sparking the controversy. In a recent interview, Rahul stated that he had supported Chinmayi's decision to forego wearing a Mangalsutra, stating that it was her personal choice. He also sparked a heated online debate by asking why men are not expected to display marital symbols while women are.
Some users politely debated the subject, but others attacked Rahul and Chinmayi in obscene and abusive ways, misrepresenting his remarks and inciting hatred. Unfazed, Chinmayi boldly responded on social media, stating that Rahul's remarks had been misconstrued. She voiced concern about the rapid transformation of conversations about women's choices into violent trolling, revealing the pervasive misogyny that persists in online culture.
As a result of the increased trolling, Chinmayi hosted a Twitter Space in which she faced her abusers head-on. She emphasized that the promotion of online toxicity is equally the responsibility of those who laugh at or respond to hateful comments with emojis. She took decisive action and brought a formal complaint to Hyderabad Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, who accepted her post and forwarded it to the relevant departments. Chinmayi's stance serves as a reminder that although laws can punish violators, real change starts with a mentality change that forbids the devaluation of women in any way.
