Ram Gopal Varma has sparked fresh debate over film censorship by stating that censoring movies in the digital age is outdated and unnecessary. Referring to the widespread availability of content on the internet, he questioned why government-appointed committees should decide what audiences are allowed to watch. He also challenged the qualifications of censor board members and argued that viewers are mature enough to make their own choices.
Varma further said that citizens who are trusted to vote and elect governments should also be trusted to decide which films to watch. He described scene cuts in theatres as meaningless in an era where unrestricted content is easily accessible online. Calling censorship harmful to creative freedom, Varma urged filmmakers to stop compromising with the censor board and demanded that the censorship system be abolished.
