Mantralayam: The Sacred Land of Guru Raghavendra Swamy on the Banks of the Tungabhadra

Mantralayam: Situated on the sacred banks of the Tungabhadra River, Mantralayam is one of the most prominent Madhwa pilgrimage centres in South India. The place is closely associated with Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy, the revered 17th-century Madhwa saint. According to traditional accounts, he was born as Venkatanatha in Bhuvanagiri and displayed exceptional interest in learning from a young age. He later studied Dvaita Vedanta, grammar and other scriptures under Sri Sudheendra Teertha before accepting Sannyasa and dedicating his life to spiritual teaching and the propagation of devotion to Lord Hari. Mantralayam, traditionally identified with the old village of Manchala, became the centre of his spiritual activities.

According to the traditional accounts followed by devotees, Sri Raghavendra Swamy entered Jeeva Brindavana in 1671, and the Brindavana at Mantralayam is revered as his sacred resting place. Thousands of devotees visit the shrine, particularly on Thursdays and during Aradhana celebrations, seeking the saint’s blessings. The Sri Raghavendra Swamy Brindavana, Guru Sarvabhouma Vidyapeetha and Manchalamma Temple are among the important places associated with the pilgrimage. Devotees traditionally visit Manchalamma before proceeding for the Brindavana darshan. The spiritual traditions surrounding the saint and the serene Tungabhadra riverbank have made Mantralayam a significant destination for pilgrims.
