After the storm created by Akhanda 2 last week, movie lovers are now turning their attention to the fresh Friday releases. With Balakrishna’s film expected to slow down after its powerful opening run, several small and medium-budget films are lining up to test their luck at the box office.
Among the new releases, Gurram Papireddy is generating relatively positive buzz. The makers are banking heavily on word of mouth and social media traction to gain momentum over the weekend. Veteran comedian Brahmanandam, who plays a key role, has been actively promoting the film through interviews and public events, reflecting the team’s confidence in the content. Whether it delivers a surprise remains to be seen.
Another modest release, Sakutumbanam, is entering the race quietly. Featuring music by Mani Sharma, the film also marks the return of actress Megha Akash after a long gap. While the promotions have been low-key, it could appeal to family audiences if the content connects.
On the re-release front, Suresh Productions is bringing back Sobhan Babu’s evergreen classic Soggadu to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Though the buzz is limited, vintage cinema lovers are looking forward to revisiting the film on the big screen.
Rajinikanth’s Shivaji is also being re-released, albeit with a one-day delay. While the producers may be expecting celebrations similar to Padayappa re-runs, the actual response could be more restrained, especially in Telugu states.
However, standing tall above all these releases is Avatar 3: Fire and Ash. The film is dominating advance bookings across cities and towns, clearly outshining other releases. While it remains to be seen if it can surpass the response of Avatar: The Way of Water, early trends suggest massive openings. The Telugu dubbed version, immersive 3D experience, and visually rich trailer are attracting audiences of all age groups.
With Akhanda 2 continuing its second-week run, Avatar 3 appears to be the only film this week with the potential to significantly fill theatres. If any of the smaller films manage to generate strong word of mouth, they could still pick up by the weekend.
