Rare Brain Surgery Successfully Performed With AI Assistance

Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming the medical field, from disease detection and scan analysis to treatment monitoring and complex surgical procedures. In a recent case in the UK, AI-assisted technology helped doctors successfully perform a complex brain surgery on 48-year-old Rhys Hibbert. Doctors said the patient has recovered and is now in good health.

Hibbert suddenly lost consciousness while walking and later suffered a seizure. Scans revealed an 11mm tumour near his pituitary gland. Although the tumour was non-cancerous, it was affecting his vision and needed to be removed to prevent further complications. Doctors used AI to analyse live surgical footage captured through an endoscope, helping them navigate around critical blood vessels and nerves during the procedure. The surgery was performed in May, but the details were disclosed only after the patient had fully recovered.
