Many people believe that drinking cold water during the rainy season can cause a cold or flu. However, doctors say cold water does not directly cause these infections. The common cold is mainly caused by viruses, which can spread through droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or by touching contaminated surfaces. Changes in weather, increased viral circulation and close contact among people may contribute to a rise in respiratory infections during the rainy season.
Very cold water may cause temporary throat irritation, discomfort or pain in some people, particularly those who already have a sore throat, allergies or an infection. To reduce the risk of common infections, experts recommend regular handwashing, good personal hygiene, a balanced diet, adequate sleep and proper hydration. People experiencing high fever, breathing difficulty, a persistent cough or prolonged symptoms should seek medical advice.
