Menstruation is not the only challenge for women every month, but the symptoms that appear before it can be even more distressing, says nutritionist Leema Mahajan. Many women experience abdominal pain, breast tenderness, bloating, anxiety, sleep disturbances, indigestion, and mood swings before their periods begin. These symptoms are collectively known as Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). Instead of depending on medication, experts suggest that including specific foods in the diet at least ten days before the period can significantly reduce these problems.
Foods such as pumpkin seeds and chickpeas can help reduce breast pain and mood fluctuations due to their rich zinc content. Calcium-rich foods like black sesame seeds and curd can ease bloating and lower abdominal pain. For fatigue and anxiety, foods high in Vitamin B6, such as sunflower seeds and bananas, are recommended. Consuming one tablespoon of sunflower seeds or a banana daily can help in managing PMS symptoms effectively.
